On 28th January, 1917, 13th Royal Sussex of 116 Brigade, 39th Division, moved into the front line in the Railway Wood sector of the Ypres salient. During the four days that they remained here the enemy artillery was very active, especially on 30th January when they responded vigorously to a bombardment by the British artillery. Many shells fell near the Battalion HQ, one hitting a servants dug-out and causing a number of casualties. That evening two strong fighting patrols were sent out to assess the damage done to the enemy wire. At sometime during the course of the day Charles Bailey was killed but it is not known whether he died as a result of the bombardment or when on patrol. |
